Hector Pool
The owners of this single-family Metairie residence wanted to enhance their outdoor living experience with a pool and water features. Although the house was already benefiting from a generous covered porch, the yard was less than ideal for relaxation. Several studies were done, including a plan in which a freestanding artist’s studio was located at one end of the pool. Ultimately, that idea was shelved in favor of what we see today. Spanning the length of the porch, the linear pool provides a focal backdrop for the house by way of a low wall. This is punctuated by custom copper water features and a row of lush trees that improve privacy. The pool itself offers several different experiences — a tanning ledge at one end, a hot tub jacuzzi in the center, and an underwater bench for lounging in the deep end.
The linear nature of the design is emphasized in the pool deck paving, including large stone slabs with strips of strategically-placed greenery between them to highlight various sections of the deck. A lush planter along the face of the porch serves as a counterweight to the pool’s low wall and softens the edge where porch and deck meet. Lush plantings spill over, breaking the formality of the planter edge and creeping their way toward the pool. At one end of the yard, a sculpture is centered on the pool, providing a counterweight to the impressive live oak at the opposite end. Overall, the restrained design and neutral palette of colors pairs beautifully with the existing house, creating a calm oasis for the family.
