Hotel Peter + Paul

The transformation of this former New Orleans archdiocese property to a boutique hotel with a distinct French flair was the culmination of the Owner’s longtime dream to develop a project of this type. Originally designed by iconic architect Henry Howard, the four historic structures — a former church, schoolhouse, rectory, and convent — were built in the late 1800s. In 2014, practis was brought on as the Architect in collaboration with New York interior design + hotel development firm ASH NYC, with whom the local Owner partnered. The result is an enchanting hotel nestled in the heart of an extraordinary neighborhood, one that celebrates the existing building fabric, while accommodating a host of program needs.

Every detail and design choice evokes a different emotional response, from the large, custom-fabricated wood windows and doors flooding cozy spaces with natural light to the repurposed historic, oversized sash windows and wood wainscoting. From the moment you enter this sacred space, you’re immersed in finishes and detailing that evoke the rich cultural texture and spirit of New Orleans. Two challenges were posed to the design team: Make the most of the available space (since hotels require a significant amount of programmed area beyond guest rooms for things like housekeeping, staff lounge, and laundry room) and celebrate the spirit of the existing buildings. Creative solutions to planning — such as transforming the attic of the school building into a fourth floor of guest rooms or introducing guest rooms on the former auditorium stage — made the most of every inch. The result is an intimate, captivating hotel experience enhanced by antique furniture, custom fabric treatments, and hand-painted finishes like the stage’s dramatic trompe-l'œil.

In addition to the guest rooms spread across the schoolhouse, rectory, and convent, the hotel boasts the eclectic Elysian Bar, a charming coffee shop with hand-painted tent-and-lemon motif reminiscent of the Amalfi coast, and the grande dame of them all: the former church, which was treated with the lightest touch to preserve its aged atmosphere — perfect for the many events held there for both hotel guests and the wider community.

The project received historic rehabilitation tax credits.
