St. Tammany Performing Arts Center
Along the Tchefuncte River, rich in wetlands and scenic, winding river views, St. Tammany Parish has conceived of an ambitious plan for a Cultural Arts District to enrich and inspire the growing population of the North Shore. At the heart of this development is a 900-seat performing arts center, serving as both a hub for visiting talent and a space for community events. The program also includes an arts education component, including a studio theater, which will provide space for various groups in the performing arts to collaborate, educate, and elevate their talent.
A major feature of the site is the wild beauty of the wetlands that run between the building’s site and the Tchefuncte River. An integral component of the venue’s operation will be an outdoor gathering space that allows visitors to inhabit the wetlands via a series of elevated boardwalks and platforms. This immersive experience will raise awareness of conservation, preservation, and the ways in which architecture and nature can co-exist when design is nimble and respectful of existing conditions.
The overall master plan of the district also includes siting for two hotels (a boutique hotel that will have direct access to the river and a convention hotel that will be able to host larger events and groups), a children’s museum, and an amphitheater. These elements will be connected by pedestrian pathways, encouraging exploration and interaction with the natural surroundings.
